Stockholm in 2 days, on foot

This 2-day self-guided walking plan for Stockholm covers 21 narrated sights in an easy day-by-day order. Each day is split into a morning and an afternoon loop, and every stop has a two to three minute audio story in the Gingerguide app.

You set the pace: this is a suggested order, not a schedule. Walk it in 2 days, or stretch it out. Reorder freely; Stockholm rewards a detour.

Day 1

Day 1 covers 11 stops over about 10 km as the crow flies, from Stockholm Palace (Kungliga slottet) to Nordiska museet (Nordic Museum). ≈ 10 km between stops, straight line

Morning

  1. Stockholm Palace (Kungliga slottet): The Swedish monarch's official Baroque residence on the edge of Gamla stan, built after a 1697 fire, with 1,430 rooms, royal museums and a daily Changing of the Guard. 0.2 km to the next stop
  2. Stortorget: The oldest square in Stockholm, ringed by colourful gabled merchant houses and the old Stock Exchange, and long remembered as the sombre site of the 1520 Stockholm Bloodbath. 0 km to the next stop
  3. Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral): Gamla stan's oldest church wears a Baroque exterior over a medieval brick-Gothic interior, and guards the celebrated 1489 Saint George and the Dragon and the earliest picture of Stockholm. 0.1 km to the next stop
  4. Nobel Prize Museum (Nobelprismuseet): In the former Stock Exchange on Stortorget, this museum tells the story of the Nobel Prize, its founder and its laureates, whose signatures hide under the cafe's chairs. 0.1 km to the next stop
  5. Gamla stan (Old Town): Stockholm's medieval heart on the island of Stadsholmen: a dense maze of ochre gables and narrow lanes where roughly three thousand people still live above centuries of history. 0.7 km to the next stop
  6. Kungsträdgården: A grand central park and square that began as the king's cabbage garden, now framed by linden avenues, royal statues, a fountain, cherry blossom and a winter skating rink. 0.6 km to the next stop

Afternoon

  1. Östermalms Saluhall (Östermalm Market Hall): A grand 1888 red-brick market hall in Ostermalm, built around a pioneering cast-iron frame to bring the food trade indoors; reopened in 2020 after a careful renovation. 3.5 km to the next stop
  2. Millesgården: The Lidingo home, studio and terraced sculpture park of Carl and Olga Milles, where his bronzes stand on tall columns high above the Vartan bay; given to Sweden in 1936. 3.8 km to the next stop
  3. Djurgården: A royal island turned public playground, Djurgarden packs Stockholm's best museums, an amusement park and open meadows onto Crown land you can roam freely at any hour. 0.7 km to the next stop
  4. Skansen: The world's oldest open-air museum by its own account, where about 150 genuine historic buildings from across Sweden were relocated onto a Stockholm hill, complete with a Nordic zoo. 0.7 km to the next stop
  5. Nordiska museet (Nordic Museum): A palace-sized museum that was never a palace, purpose-built to hold Sweden's everyday cultural history from 1520 to now, watched over by a colossal Gustav Vasa statue in its 126-metre Great Hall.

Day 2

Day 2 covers 10 stops over about 15 km as the crow flies, from Vasa Museum to Drottningholm Palace (Drottningholms slott). ≈ 15 km between stops, straight line

Morning

  1. Vasa Museum: A seven-storey warship that capsized on her maiden voyage in 1628, raised largely intact after 333 years and now displayed almost entirely original and astonishingly whole. 0.4 km to the next stop
  2. Moderna Museet: Sweden's state collection of modern and contemporary art, set in a low Rafael Moneo building on the island of Skeppsholmen, with sculpture scattered free across the quays outside. 0.8 km to the next stop
  3. ABBA The Museum: An unapologetically interactive shrine to the Swedish pop group ABBA, where you can record a song, share a stage with digital avatars and eye a phone only the band can call. 0.1 km to the next stop
  4. Gröna Lund: Sweden's oldest amusement park by widely reported reckoning, a tightly packed 1883 fairground on Djurgarden with seven roller coasters and a startling history as a concert stage. 0.9 km to the next stop
  5. Fotografiska: A privately run photography museum with no permanent collection, staging big rotating exhibitions inside a 1906 former customs house on Sodermalm's quay, with a Michelin Green Star restaurant. 0.1 km to the next stop

Afternoon

  1. Fjällgatan: A cliffside Sodermalm street of preserved eighteenth-century wooden houses, whose panoramic terrace over Saltsjon toward Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen and Djurgarden ranks among the city's classic, best-loved viewpoints. 1 km to the next stop
  2. Södermalm: Stockholm's hilly southern island, once poor and now bohemian: cliff-top viewpoints, the domed Katarina Church, independent boutiques and vintage shops, and the cafe-lined SoFo grid south of Folkungagatan. 1.3 km to the next stop
  3. Riddarholmen Church (Riddarholmskyrkan): The burial church of Sweden's monarchs on Riddarholmen islet: a late-medieval brick-Gothic church, crowned by a cast-iron spire that replaced the original after lightning struck it in 1835. 0.6 km to the next stop
  4. Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset): A red-brick National Romantic landmark on Lake Malaren, home to the Nobel banquet's Blue Hall, which despite its name is bare brick, and the glittering mosaic Golden Hall. 9.6 km to the next stop
  5. Drottningholm Palace (Drottningholms slott): The Swedish royal family's private residence on Lovon island and a UNESCO site, this Baroque palace holds a formal garden, an eighteenth-century Court Theatre and the Chinese Pavilion.

Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
