About Millesgården

The Lidingo home, studio and terraced sculpture park of Carl and Olga Milles, where his bronzes stand on tall columns high above the Vartan bay; given to Sweden in 1936.

Millesgarden is the former home, studio and sculpture park of the sculptor Carl Milles (1875-1955) and his wife, the painter Olga Milles (1874-1967), on the island of Lidingo northeast of central Stockholm. The couple bought the property in 1906, and the main house, designed by Karl M. Bengtson, was inaugurated in 1908. It served as their primary residence until 1931, when Carl Milles moved to the United States. In 1936 Millesgarden was transformed into a foundation and given to the Swedish people.

Millesgarden consists of three main parts: the artists' former home, an art gallery, and a sculpture park arranged on terraces high above the Vartan bay. The park displays bronzes of Milles's works, among them 'Man and Pegasus', 'God's Hand', 'Europa and the Bull' and the Folkunga Fountain, many of them casts whose originals stand elsewhere. The Konsthall art hall, designed by Johan Celsing, opened in 1999.

Did you know? Carl Milles and his wife, the painter Olga Milles, bought the property in 1906 and turned it into a foundation in 1936, giving Millesgarden to the Swedish people while both were still alive.
