About Fjällgatan

A cliffside Sodermalm street of preserved eighteenth-century wooden houses, whose panoramic terrace over Saltsjon toward Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen and Djurgarden ranks among the city's classic, best-loved viewpoints.

Fjallgatan is a cliffside street on the hill Stigberget in Stockholm's Sodermalm district, within the Katarina parish. It received its current name in 1885 during a major renaming of the city's streets, having earlier been called Katarina ostra kyrkogata; the hill's older name referred to the gallows that stood on Stigberget in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The street runs about 27.8 metres above the bay Saltsjon, along the cliff edge between Renstiernas gata and Erstagatan, and preserves well-kept eighteenth-century wooden houses, several classified as culturally valuable by the Stockholm City Museum.

Its large panoramic terrace, renamed Per Anders Fogelstroms Terrass in 1999 after the author who lived at Fjallgatan 30 from 1964 to 1998, gives a classic view over Saltsjon toward Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen, Kastellholmen and Djurgarden, with the Stadsgarden harbour below. The seasonal cafe Fjallgatans Kaffestuga occupies an 1872 former weigh-house and has been family-run since 1968. The Sista Styverns trappor stairway descends to the quay.

Did you know? The hill Stigberget was the city's execution ground in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; the street only took the name Fjallgatan in 1885, during a sweeping renaming of Stockholm's streets.
