About Södermalm
Stockholm's hilly southern island, once poor and now bohemian: cliff-top viewpoints, the domed Katarina Church, independent boutiques and vintage shops, and the cafe-lined SoFo grid south of Folkungagatan.
Sodermalm is the southern district of Stockholm's inner city, occupying an island historically named Ason and covering roughly 5.71 square kilometres. Its name is first documented as Suthaermalm in 1288, when the land was largely rural. Until the early seventeenth century it remained mainly agricultural, then filled with working-class housing and was long regarded as a poor part of the city. Built on hills and sheer cliffs, it is nicknamed Soders hojder, the heights of the south, and offers elevated viewpoints over the skyline.
Today Sodermalm is associated with bohemian and alternative culture, independent boutiques, vintage shops, cafes and cultural venues, and has undergone marked gentrification. The area south of Folkungagatan is informally called SoFo. Since 2007 the district has been the seat of its own borough. Linked by numerous bridges, it is served by metro stations including Slussen, Medborgarplatsen, Mariatorget and Zinkensdamm, and the domed Katarina Church stands on its heights.
Did you know? Sodermalm's name appears in records as Suthaermalm as early as 1288, when the island was farmland; only from the early seventeenth century did working-class housing gradually replace its fields and pastures.
