About Moderna Museet
Sweden's state collection of modern and contemporary art, set in a low Rafael Moneo building on the island of Skeppsholmen, with sculpture scattered free across the quays outside.
Moderna Museet is Sweden's state museum for modern and contemporary art and design, on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm. It opened in 1958, initially using the island's former drill hall, and moved into a purpose-built home designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, completed in 1998; the Pontus Hulten Study Gallery was designed by Renzo Piano. The collection comprises roughly 6,000 paintings, about 25,000 prints and works on paper, some 400 art videos and films, and around 100,000 photographs.
Artists represented include Picasso, Dali, Matisse, Duchamp, Rauschenberg and Louise Bourgeois, and the holdings feature a reconstructed model of Tatlin's Tower. In 1993 thieves stole six Picassos and two Braques; the Picassos and one Braque were later recovered. Mould and damp forced the building to close in January 2002, and it reopened in February 2004. Former director Pontus Hulten bequeathed over 700 works in 2005. A free outdoor collection is spread across Skeppsholmen, and Gitte Orskou has directed the museum since 2019.
Did you know? On 8 November 1993 thieves entered through the roof and stole six Picassos and two Braques worth over £40 million; the Picassos and one Braque were recovered, but one Braque was not.
