About Skansen

The world's oldest open-air museum by its own account, where about 150 genuine historic buildings from across Sweden were relocated onto a Stockholm hill, complete with a Nordic zoo.

Skansen is an open-air museum and zoo on Djurgarden, founded by Artur Hazelius and opened on 11 October 1891. Hazelius assembled about 150 historic buildings from across Sweden, plus one from Telemark in Norway, and had them relocated to the site to show how Swedes had lived in different regions before the industrial era. Most of the buildings are genuine; only three are copies. The oldest, Skogaholm Manor, has a core from around 1680, and there are sixteenth-century farmhouses from Alvros.

The grounds include Seglora Church and a re-created nineteenth-century town quarter where craftspeople demonstrate traditional trades, while the zoo keeps Nordic wildlife such as brown bear, moose, lynx, wolverine, reindeer and Arctic fox. Skansen was originally part of the Nordiska museet and became independent in 1963, though the museum still owns the objects inside its buildings. A Christmas market has been held in the Bollnas square since 1903. The word skansen has become a generic term for open-air museums.

Did you know? Founder Artur Hazelius relocated about 150 historic buildings from across Sweden, and one from Norway, to a Stockholm hill, where they were rebuilt piece by piece; most are genuine structures, and only three are copies.
