About Gingerguide

Gingerguide is a self-guided audio tour app for iPhone and Android that tells you the story of each sight in 132 European cities, in six languages, for travelers who want to know what they are looking at without paying for a guide.

What Gingerguide does

You are in a city you do not know. The signs tell you little, and a guided tour runs on someone else's schedule. With Gingerguide you open the city, walk where you like, and hear a researched two to three minute story at each sight. When the story leaves you curious, you ask the built-in AI guide a follow-up question.

Gingerguide is not a booking engine, a hotel marketplace or a transit app. If you need reservations or live timetables, use another app.

What makes Gingerguide different

  • Six languages for every sight. Each story is fully narrated in English, Spanish, French, German, Turkish and Chinese, not only the menus.
  • Depth past the famous sights. 2,600+ narrated sights in 132 cities across 32 countries, including smaller churches, squares and museums.
  • The whole city offline. Download a city once and the audio, photos and map work without a data connection.
  • An AI guide you can ask. Follow-up answers are grounded in our researched text about the sight. How we research and check each story.
  • No schedule, no account, a free preview. Every city has a free preview, you do not need an account to try it, and you walk at your own pace instead of on a group tour's timetable.

How Gingerguide compares with other audio guide apps, in one line each:

  • VoiceMap: curated walks by individual creators worldwide, bought tour by tour. Gingerguide covers whole European cities in one app.
  • Rick Steves Audio Europe: free and good, in English, for the headline sights. Gingerguide also covers the rest of the city, in six languages.
  • izi.TRAVEL: an open platform with many publishers, strong for museums. Gingerguide gives one consistent guide per city.
  • GuideAlong: made for road trips by car. Gingerguide is made for cities on foot.

Who uses Gingerguide

Short city-break travelers

You have two to five days and want to see the city properly without booking a tour for every morning. Gingerguide gives you the story of each sight as you walk past it, on your own time.

Travelers who do not speak the local language

The plaque is in French, the sign in Hungarian. Gingerguide tells you what it says and why it matters, in your language.

Curious walkers who go past the top ten

The famous sights are easy to read about. Gingerguide also covers the small church, the side square and the local museum that the guidebook skips.

The person behind Gingerguide

Gingerguide is made by one person, Ege Ozalp, who builds the app, researches the cities and edits the guides. There is no company or staff behind it, and messages to support reach Ege directly.

The idea started in the south of France in 2016. Ege walked past a small church that was not a major sight and wanted to know its story, but did not read enough French to find it out. A private guide could have told him, but a private guide costs far too much for one question on a walk. Gingerguide is the guide he wanted that day.

The first version of Gingerguide came out in 2018, and in 2019 Ege took part in the Founder Institute Berlin program with it. He stopped work on it in 2022. In June 2026 he rebuilt the app from scratch: current AI now helps with research, translation, lifelike narration and the follow-up guide, and the catalog has grown to 132 cities. How each story is researched and checked.
