About Nordiska museet (Nordic Museum)
A palace-sized museum that was never a palace, purpose-built to hold Sweden's everyday cultural history from 1520 to now, watched over by a colossal Gustav Vasa statue in its 126-metre Great Hall.
The Nordiska museet, or Nordic Museum, is Sweden's largest museum of cultural history, on Djurgarden in Stockholm. It was founded by Artur Hazelius, who began the collection in 1873 as the Scandinavian Ethnographic Collection; it took the name Nordiska museet in 1880. The museum documents Swedish life and cultural history from about 1520 to the present day. Its grand Renaissance-revival building, designed by Isak Gustaf Clason, was completed in 1907, though it was intended to be several times larger.
The cathedral-like Great Hall runs about 126 metres through the full height of the building and is dominated by a colossal painted-oak statue of King Gustav Vasa by the sculptor Carl Milles. The collections hold over 1.5 million objects and roughly 6 million photographs dating from the 1840s onward. The Skansen open-air museum grew out of the Nordiska museet, which still owns the objects displayed inside Skansen's buildings. The museum stands at Djurgardsvagen 6 to 16, near the Vasa Museum.
Did you know? The building is often mistaken for a palace or castle, but it was purpose-built as a museum between 1888 and 1907, and was designed to be several times larger than what was finished.
