About Vasa Museum
A seven-storey warship that capsized on her maiden voyage in 1628, raised largely intact after 333 years and now displayed almost entirely original and astonishingly whole.
The Vasa Museum on Djurgarden is built around the warship Vasa, which capsized and sank in Stockholm harbour on 10 August 1628, on her maiden voyage, after sailing only about 1,300 metres. Around thirty people died. The ship had very little stability because too much weight sat high in the hull, and a gust let water enter the open lower gun ports. Vasa remained on the seabed for 333 years until she was salvaged largely intact in 1961.
Conservators preserved the timber with polyethylene glycol between 1961 and 1983, and the museum states that over 98 percent of the ship is original. The purpose-built museum, designed by Marianne Dahlback and Goran Mansson, opened in 1990. The ship carried 64 guns and stood roughly 52.5 metres from keel to masthead. Recorded attendance reached about 1.35 million in 2024, and the museum is often described as one of Scandinavia's most visited.
Did you know? The museum states that over 98 percent of the Vasa is original timber, a figure calculated by its own head of research; only about two percent has been replaced in modern times.
