About Djurgården

A royal island turned public playground, Djurgarden packs Stockholm's best museums, an amusement park and open meadows onto Crown land you can roam freely at any hour.

Djurgarden is an island in central Stockholm that has been Crown property since the fifteenth century, its use overseen today by the Royal Djurgarden Administration within the Royal Court of Sweden. King John III declared it a royal game park in 1579, fencing it for deer, reindeer and elk, and it served as a hunting ground until the late eighteenth century, when it gradually opened as a public recreation area. The Djurgarden Theatre opened in 1801.

The island now holds several of Stockholm's leading attractions, among them Skansen, the Vasa Museum, the Nordic Museum, ABBA The Museum and the Grona Lund amusement park. Rosendal Palace, a royal summer villa in the Empire style, was built in 1823 to 1827, and Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde estate became a public art museum in 1948. Djurgarden forms part of the Royal National City Park, established in 1995, and is reached by the ornate Djurgardsbron bridge of 1897.

Did you know? The Swedish monarch has held the right of disposition over Royal Djurgarden since the fifteenth century, and the island remains Crown land managed by an administration attached to the Royal Court.
