About Riddarholmen Church (Riddarholmskyrkan)
The burial church of Sweden's monarchs on Riddarholmen islet: a late-medieval brick-Gothic church, crowned by a cast-iron spire that replaced the original after lightning struck it in 1835.
Riddarholmen Church (Riddarholmskyrkan) stands on the islet of Riddarholmen, just west of Gamla stan, and is one of Stockholm's oldest buildings, with parts dating to the late 13th century. It was originally built as the church of a Greyfriars (Franciscan) monastery. The building is in a Northern European brick-Gothic style with baroque additions; the original spire, designed by the Flemish architect Willem Boy, was destroyed by a lightning strike on 28 July 1835 and replaced by the present openwork cast-iron spire.
It is the burial church of the Swedish monarchs, holding most of the country's kings and queens, from Gustavus Adolphus to Gustaf V, together with the medieval kings Magnus Ladulas and Charles VIII; Queen Christina is a notable exception, buried in Rome. The parish was dissolved in 1807, and the church now serves burial, commemorative and museum functions. Royal burials have since moved to the Royal Cemetery.
Did you know? The church's distinctive dark openwork spire is not medieval: it is a cast-iron replacement built after lightning destroyed the earlier spire, designed by Flemish architect Willem Boy, on 28 July 1835.
