About Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral)
Gamla stan's oldest church wears a Baroque exterior over a medieval brick-Gothic interior, and guards the celebrated 1489 Saint George and the Dragon and the earliest picture of Stockholm.
Storkyrkan, the Church of St Nicholas (Sankt Nikolai kyrka), is the oldest church in Gamla stan; a church on the site was first documented in 1279, and the dedication to Saint Nicholas is traditionally dated to 1306. It stands in the medieval core between the Royal Palace and Stortorget. The interior keeps its medieval brick-Gothic hall-church form, while the exterior was given a uniform Baroque appearance in renovations of 1736-1745. The building is 63 metres long, 37.2 metres wide and 60.4 metres high to the top of the tower.
The church holds the wooden sculpture Saint George and the Dragon, inaugurated in 1489 and widely attributed to Bernt Notke, commemorating Sten Sture the Elder's 1471 victory at Brunkeberg. It also houses Vadersolstavlan, the oldest known depiction of Stockholm. Long used for royal weddings and coronations, it was raised to cathedral status in 1942.
Did you know? The wooden Saint George and the Dragon, inaugurated in 1489, is widely attributed to Bernt Notke and commemorates Sten Sture the Elder's 1471 victory at the Battle of Brunkeberg, though the attribution is traditional.
