About Nobel Prize Museum (Nobelprismuseet)

In the former Stock Exchange on Stortorget, this museum tells the story of the Nobel Prize, its founder and its laureates, whose signatures hide under the cafe's chairs.

The Nobel Prize Museum (Nobelprismuseet) opened in spring 2001 to mark the centenary of the Nobel Prize. It was called the Nobel Museum until 2019, when it was renamed. The museum occupies the former Stock Exchange building (Borshuset) on the north side of Stortorget in Gamla stan, designed by Erik Palmstedt and built 1773-1776; the same building also houses the Swedish Academy and the Nobel Library. The museum is owned by the Nobel Foundation.

It tells the story of the Nobel Prize and its laureates, and of the prize's founder, Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). Displays pair objects donated by laureates with their personal stories, featuring figures such as Marie Curie, Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill, while the travelling exhibition Sketches of Science presents photographs of 42 laureates with their own hand-drawn sketches. During Nobel week, visiting laureates sign the undersides of chairs in the Bistro Nobel cafe.
