About Stockholm Palace (Kungliga slottet)

The Swedish monarch's official Baroque residence on the edge of Gamla stan, built after a 1697 fire, with 1,430 rooms, royal museums and a daily Changing of the Guard.

Kungliga slottet, the Royal Palace, is the official residence of the Swedish monarch, standing on Stadsholmen in Gamla stan. Built in the Baroque style, it was designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and continued after his death by Carl Harleman. Construction began in 1697, the same year the medieval Tre Kronor castle on the site was destroyed by fire on 7 May. The palace was ready for use in 1754, when King Adolf Frederick and Queen Louisa Ulrika moved in, and was completed around 1760.

The interior contains 1,430 rooms, of which 660 have windows, and about 800,000 people visit each year. The main body forms a roughly square block around an inner courtyard, with lower projecting wings, and the Outer Courtyard hosts the daily Changing of the Guard. The palace houses the Royal Armoury, the Treasury with the Regalia of Sweden, and the Tre Kronor Museum.

Did you know? You often hear the palace called one of Europe's largest, with about 600 rooms. It actually holds 1,430 rooms in total, of which 660 have windows, roughly matching that oft-quoted figure.
