About Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset)

A red-brick National Romantic landmark on Lake Malaren, home to the Nobel banquet's Blue Hall, which despite its name is bare brick, and the glittering mosaic Golden Hall.

Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset) is the seat of the Stockholm municipal council, standing on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island on the shore of Lake Malaren. Designed by Ragnar Ostberg and built between 1911 and 1923 in the National Romantic style, it was inaugurated on 23 June 1923, Midsummer's Eve. It is constructed of about 8 million red bricks of a type known as munktegel (monk's brick), and its tower rises about 106 metres, topped by three golden crowns, the Tre Kronor.

The Blue Hall hosts the annual Nobel Prize banquet; despite its name its walls are bare red brick, after Ostberg abandoned a plan to render them blue but kept the name. Above it, the Golden Hall is decorated with roughly 18 million gold-leaf and glass mosaic tiles depicting Swedish historical motifs, dominated by the Queen of Lake Malaren. The tower is reached by lift and 365 steps.

Did you know? The Blue Hall, where the Nobel banquet is held, is not actually blue: Ragnar Ostberg dropped his plan to render the brick blue but kept the name, so the walls remain bare red brick.
