About Kungsträdgården

A grand central park and square that began as the king's cabbage garden, now framed by linden avenues, royal statues, a fountain, cherry blossom and a winter skating rink.

Kungstradgarden, the King's Garden, is a park and public square in the Norrmalm district of central Stockholm, bordered by Stromgatan, Hamngatan and Kungstradgardsgatan and flanked by the Royal Swedish Opera and the NK department store. The site was first recorded in 1430 as the royal kitchen garden and was enlarged in 1454. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it formed an enclosed royal Baroque pleasure garden, though that formal layout no longer survives.

The present park holds a bronze statue of Charles XII by Johan Peter Molin, inaugurated in 1868, a statue of Charles XIII from 1821 with flanking lions added in 1824, and Molin's Fountain, cast in bronze and inaugurated in 1873. Sixty-three Japanese cherry trees planted in 1998 bloom each spring, and 285 lindens were planted in 2004. Owned by Stockholm Municipality, the park stays open year-round, running a seasonal skating rink and hosting concerts and public events.

Did you know? The earliest record of the site, from 1430, calls it the konungens kalgard, literally the king's cabbage garden, when it supplied vegetables to the royal kitchen rather than serving as a showpiece square.
