About Fotografiska
A privately run photography museum with no permanent collection, staging big rotating exhibitions inside a 1906 former customs house on Sodermalm's quay, with a Michelin Green Star restaurant.
Fotografiska is a centre for contemporary photography in Stockholm, founded in 2010 by the brothers Jan and Per Broman. It occupies the former Stora Tullhuset, a customs house on the Stadsgarden quay on the island of Sodermalm. The building was completed in 1906 in an Art Nouveau (Jugend) style to a design by the architect Ferdinand Boberg, and is listed as culturally significant. Rather than a collecting museum, Fotografiska has no permanent collection and instead runs a programme of rotating temporary exhibitions.
Its opening exhibition in 2010 was Annie Leibovitz's 'A Photographer's Life', followed in 2011 by a Robert Mapplethorpe retrospective. Before the 2020 pandemic the Stockholm venue reported more than 500,000 visitors a year. The organisation states that it operates independently of state funding or donations, and its restaurant has been recognised with a MICHELIN Green Star. It has also expanded internationally to cities including Tallinn, Berlin and Shanghai.
Did you know? Unlike a collecting museum, Fotografiska owns no permanent collection; it functions as a privately run photography kunsthalle, filling its walls with a continuous programme of temporary exhibitions that change several times a year.
How much time do you need at Fotografiska?
