About Östermalms Saluhall (Östermalm Market Hall)

A grand 1888 red-brick market hall in Ostermalm, built around a pioneering cast-iron frame to bring the food trade indoors; reopened in 2020 after a careful renovation.

Ostermalms Saluhall is a covered food market hall in Stockholm's Ostermalm district, inaugurated on 30 November 1888 in the presence of King Oscar II. It was designed by the architects Isak Gustaf Clason and Kasper Salin, both then in their early thirties, in a red-brick style influenced by North German, Italian and French brick architecture. The building was constructed in about six months to move the food trade indoors from the adjacent open-air square Ostermalmstorg, where handling food outdoors had raised sanitary concerns.

Covering roughly 3,000 square metres, the hall is built around an advanced cast-iron framework that was novel in Sweden at the time. It carries Stockholm's highest cultural-heritage classification, meaning it must not be altered. The hall closed for a major renovation from 2016 to 2020 and reopened on 5 March 2020. It was named Stockholm Building of the Year 2021 and is managed by the City of Stockholm.

Did you know? The building permit was submitted on 13 March 1888 and approved within days, and the entire hall was completed in roughly six months, opening before the end of that same year.
