About Drottningholm Palace (Drottningholms slott)

The Swedish royal family's private residence on Lovon island and a UNESCO site, this Baroque palace holds a formal garden, an eighteenth-century Court Theatre and the Chinese Pavilion.

Drottningholm Palace stands on the island of Lovon, west of central Stockholm, and is the private residence of the Swedish royal family, who have lived in the southern wing since 1981. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. The present Baroque palace was begun in 1662 by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder for the dowager queen Hedvig Eleonora, after an earlier palace on the site had burned; his son Nicodemus Tessin the Younger continued the work. The formal Baroque garden includes bronze sculptures by Adriaen de Vries.

The Chinese Pavilion (Kina slott) was built in 1763-1769, replacing an earlier wooden pavilion given as a surprise to Queen Lovisa Ulrika in 1753. The Drottningholm Palace Theatre opened in 1766, after the earlier theatre burned in 1762; it preserves original 18th-century stage machinery and still hosts a summer opera festival. Parts of the palace are open to the public, while the royal family occupies the private southern wing.

Did you know? Unlike Stockholm Palace, which is the monarch's official residence, Drottningholm is the royal family's actual home: King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia have lived in its southern wing since 1981.
