About Girona

Welcome to Girona, one of the loveliest and best-kept secrets of Catalonia, in the north-east corner of Spain. It is a compact, walkable city of extraordinary richness: a maze of medieval lanes climbing a hill above the Onyar river, crowned by a mighty cathedral, ringed by ancient walls, and famous above all for the row of brightly coloured houses that line the water. Let us explore it together.

Girona is very old. It began as the Roman town of Gerunda, set on an important road, and over the centuries it became one of the most fought-over cities in Europe, enduring some twenty-five sieges. Charlemagne's Franks took it from the Moors, and for generations it stood as a fortress on the frontier of the Christian world, which is why its walls are so mighty and its history so dramatic.

The old town is a treasure house. Its cathedral is covered by the widest Gothic nave ever built, reached up a sweeping staircase of ninety steps. Nearby stand the tall-spired church of Sant Feliu, the elegant Arab Baths, and a beautiful Romanesque monastery. And threading through it all is the Call, the medieval Jewish Quarter, one of the best-preserved in all of Europe, and once a great centre of Jewish learning and mysticism.

Then there is the river, and the image that has made Girona famous. Along the Onyar, the backs of the old houses were painted, in 1982, in a whole palette of warm colours, and reflected in the water beneath the cathedral towers they make one of the most photographed views in Spain, best seen from the little red bridge that Gustave Eiffel's company built.

In recent years Girona has found a new kind of fame, for its ancient streets and its cathedral steps starred as King's Landing and Braavos in Game of Thrones, and fans now come to walk where the characters walked. Each May the whole old town bursts into bloom for the Temps de Flors flower festival, when its courtyards and monuments are filled with flowers.

And all around lie the green hills and medieval towns of this corner of Catalonia, among them the spellbinding Besalú, with its fortified bridge. So come and discover a city that too many visitors rush past on their way elsewhere. We will climb its walls, cross its bridges, wander its Jewish lanes and gaze at its coloured houses in the river. Welcome to Girona, and let us begin.
