About Besalú

A spellbinding medieval town near Girona, entered across a long fortified stone bridge over the river. Once the seat of its own county, it keeps Romanesque churches and a rare medieval Jewish ritual bath.

Besalú, about thirty kilometres north of Girona, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Catalonia, famously entered across its long, angular fortified bridge over the Fluvià river. Once the capital of its own medieval county, it keeps a dense old centre of Romanesque churches, an arcaded main square and narrow stone lanes.

Its rarest treasure is the mikveh, a medieval Jewish ritual bath, one of very few surviving in Europe, reached by steps down to a vaulted chamber, a relic of the town's old Jewish community. The fortified bridge, medieval in origin but much rebuilt over the centuries, is the classic image of Besalú.
