About Parc de la Devesa

Catalonia's largest urban park, a cool green refuge of long avenues lined with soaring plane trees, some over fifty metres tall. Planted around 1850, they make a cathedral of leaves beside the city's rivers.

The Parc de la Devesa, west of the old town between the city's rivers, is the largest urban park in Catalonia, about forty hectares of green. Its glory is its avenues of plane trees, about two and a half thousand of them, planted close together around 1850 so that they grew astonishingly tall and straight, the tallest measured at over fifty metres, among the tallest trees in Catalonia.

The park has shady walks, formal French gardens, a cafe and sports and fair grounds; each autumn the Sant Narcís fair brings rides and festivities. It is a cool refuge in summer and a cathedral of bare trunks in winter.
