About Plaça de la Independència

The grand arcaded square across the river, ringed by uniform neoclassical facades and lively cafe terraces. At its centre stands a bronze monument to the defenders of Girona in the great sieges against Napoleon.

The Plaça de la Independència, in the Mercadal district across the Onyar, is Girona's grand 19th-century square, ringed by uniform neoclassical facades over arcades busy with cafe and restaurant terraces. It was laid out from the 1850s on the site of a former Augustinian convent, to a plan by the city architect Martí Sureda, and completed in its present symmetrical form only in the late 20th century.

At its centre rises a bronze monument of 1894 to the defenders of Girona in the sieges of 1808-1809, when the city held out against Napoleon's armies for seven months. Lively day and night, the square is one of the busiest in the city.
