About Basílica de Sant Feliu
Girona's second great church, its tall Gothic spire, cut short by lightning, a landmark across the old town. Inside are ancient Roman sarcophagi set in the walls and a serene alabaster carving of the recumbent Christ.
The Basílica de Sant Feliu, dedicated to the martyr St Felix, is Girona's second great church, its tall Gothic bell tower a landmark across the old town; the tower's spire was cut short by lightning in 1651. Built mainly in the 14th century over far older churches on a site of Roman Gerunda, it marks one of the city's oldest places of Christian worship.
Set into the walls of its sanctuary are eight Roman and early Christian sarcophagi of the 3rd and 4th centuries, carved with reliefs, among the church's great treasures. It also holds the Gothic tomb of St Narcissus, patron of Girona, and a serene alabaster Crist Jacent, a recumbent Christ of around 1350. It was raised to a minor basilica in 2011.
