Girona Cathedral, the Catedral de Santa Maria, crowns the highest point of the old town, approached by a dramatic Baroque staircase of ninety steps. Its most famous feature is inside: a single Gothic nave almost twenty-three metres across, the widest Gothic nave ever built. Begun in 1312 with a three-aisled plan, the bold single-nave design was adopted after expert councils in the 1380s and 1410s and carried out from 1417.
Beside the Gothic bulk rises the Romanesque Charlemagne Tower, a survivor of an earlier church. The treasury museum holds two masterpieces: the Tapestry of Creation, an embroidered cloth of around the 11th or 12th century, and the Girona Beatus, an illuminated manuscript of 975 signed by a woman painter, Ende, and the monk Emeterius. The cathedral's facade and steps played the Great Sept of Baelor in Game of Thrones.
