About The Call (Jewish Quarter)

One of the best-preserved medieval Jewish quarters in Europe, a steep maze of stone lanes around Carrer de la Força. Home of the great scholar Nahmanides, it is now also the Museum of Jewish History.

El Call is Girona's medieval Jewish Quarter, among the best-preserved in Europe: a warren of steep, narrow, stepped lanes around Carrer de la Força, in the heart of the old town. A Jewish community lived here from the late 9th century until the expulsion of 1492, and medieval Girona was a famous centre of Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical tradition.

Its most celebrated figure was the rabbi, physician and philosopher Nahmanides, known as Ramban, born here in 1194, who in 1263 defended Judaism in the great Disputation of Barcelona before King James I. Today the Museu d'Història dels Jueus, in the Centre Bonastruc ça Porta on the site of the last synagogue, tells the community's story. Look at the doorways for the small slots that once held mezuzahs.
