About Banys Àrabs (Arab Baths)
Despite the name, these elegant bathhouses are Christian-built Romanesque work of the 12th century. A ring of slender columns circles a cool pool beneath a lantern dome, with warm and hot rooms heated from below.
The Banys Àrabs, or Arab Baths, are a beautifully preserved public bathhouse, though despite the name they are not Moorish at all: they were built by Christians in the Romanesque style of the 12th century, inspired by Roman, Muslim and Jewish bathing traditions. First documented in 1194 and rebuilt after the siege of 1285, they follow the old Roman sequence of cold, warm and hot rooms, the heated floors warmed from below by a hypocaust.
The showpiece is the cold room, where eight slender columns ring an octagonal pool and carry a lantern that lets light fall from above. Later used as a convent, the baths were restored from 1929, partly by the Girona architect Rafael Masó.
