About Sant Pere de Galligants
A superb 12th-century Romanesque Benedictine monastery, with an octagonal bell tower, a carved rose window and a serene columned cloister. It now houses Catalonia's archaeology museum for the Girona region.
Sant Pere de Galligants is a former Benedictine monastery in the lower old town, one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Catalonia. Documented from the 10th century, its present church dates from the 12th, with a basilica of three naves, an unusual octagonal bell tower and a west front set with a fine carved rose window.
Attached to the church is a tranquil Romanesque cloister of the later 12th century, its arcades on paired columns topped with capitals carved with biblical scenes, lions, sirens and foliage, close kin to those in the cathedral cloister. Today the monastery houses the Girona branch of the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya, with finds from the region's prehistory, Greek and Roman past. Beside it stands the little chapel of Sant Nicolau.
