About Rambla de la Llibertat
The arcaded main promenade of the old town, running along the river beneath Gothic vaults and leafy trees. For centuries a market square, it is Girona's social heart, lined with cafes and Saturday flower stalls.
The Rambla de la Llibertat is the main promenade of Girona's old town, running along the Onyar from the stone bridge, the Pont de Pedra. On its eastern side runs a long arcade of vaults, some medieval and Gothic, sheltering cafes and shops; leafy trees line the walk.
For centuries this was the city's great market square, the Plaça de les Cols, where traders gathered from across the region; its present broad, continuous form dates from 1885. Today it is the social heart of Girona, a place for an evening stroll, a vermouth at a cafe terrace or a bunch of flowers from the Saturday stalls. Its name honours a Tree of Liberty planted here in 1869.
