About Passeig de la Muralla
A walk along the top of Girona's ancient ramparts, Roman and Carolingian in their roots, climbing past towers and hillside gardens to the city's highest points, with sweeping views over the old town and the hills.
The Passeig de la Muralla is a walkway along the top of Girona's old city walls, a chance to circle the historic town high above its rooftops. The walls are ancient in their roots: first raised by the Romans who founded Gerunda, heavily rebuilt in the Carolingian centuries when Girona guarded the frontier between Franks and Moors, and extended again in the Middle Ages.
The eastern stretches, left standing but abandoned, were restored between 1983 and 2003 to create today's walking route. It climbs past towers and the hillside gardens of the Jardins dels Alemanys to the Torre Gironella at the city's highest point, giving sweeping views over the old town, the cathedral and Sant Feliu towers, and the hills beyond.
