About Montserrat

Welcome to Montserrat, the holy mountain of Catalonia, one of the most extraordinary places in Spain. Rising near Barcelona in a crown of strange, rounded rock pinnacles, it is at once a dramatic mountain, a thousand-year-old monastery and the spiritual heart of a whole nation. Pilgrims, art-lovers and walkers all find their reward here. Let us explore it together.

First, the mountain itself. Montserrat means 'the serrated mountain', and its long ridge of pink conglomerate rock, worn into hundreds of finger-like peaks and domes, is unlike anything else in Europe. It is a protected natural park and a world-famous climbing ground, and simply gazing at its weird and beautiful skyline is half the wonder of a visit.

On a ledge partway up clings the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, founded by Abbot Oliba around the year 1025. For a thousand years its Benedictine monks have kept prayer and song alive here. Destroyed by Napoleon's armies and lovingly rebuilt, the abbey became, in hard times, a refuge of the Catalan language and a symbol of Catalan identity itself.

At its heart sits the reason the pilgrims come: La Moreneta, the little dark statue of the Virgin of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia, enshrined above the basilica altar. Her hymn is sung each day by the Escolania, a boys' choir that has been singing on this mountain for more than seven hundred years, one of the oldest choirs in Europe.

But Montserrat offers far more than its shrine. There is a surprising art museum, with a Caravaggio and a room of French Impressionists; the cliff-hanging chapel of the Santa Cova, reached by a path of sculptures that includes a work by Gaudí; scattered hermitages; and, for walkers, funiculars and trails that climb to the summit of Sant Jeroni and its vast views over Catalonia.

Reached by a thrilling rack railway or a swinging cable car from the valley below, Montserrat makes an unforgettable day out from Barcelona. Mountain and monastery, art and faith, legend and landscape: all are gathered on this one astonishing rock. Welcome to Montserrat, and let us begin.

    nature · ~90 min visit

Three things most visitors miss

The Basilica

The Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat is a single-nave church consecrated in 1592, between the Gothic and Renaissance styles; Napoleon's troops left it in ruins in 1811-1812 and it was rebuilt through the later 19th century.

La Moreneta (the Black Madonna)

La Moreneta, the Virgin of Montserrat, is a Romanesque wooden carving of the late 12th century, about 95 centimetres tall, of the 'Throne of Wisdom' type; she holds an orb, and the Christ Child holds a pinecone and blesses.

The Benedictine Monastery

The Benedictine monastery of Montserrat grew from a hermitage given to the abbey of Ripoll in 888 and was founded around 1025 by Abbot Oliba; it became an independent abbey in 1409 and ran a printing press from the 1490s.
