About The Escolania (Boys' Choir)
One of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe, documented here since at least 1307. Each day its young voices fill the basilica with the Salve and the Virolai, the hymn of Montserrat.
The Escolania de Montserrat is the monastery's boys' choir and choir school, one of the oldest in Europe, documented at Montserrat since at least 1307, with origins in the 13th century. Around forty-six boys, aged nine to fourteen and drawn from across Catalonia, live and study here, dividing their days between ordinary schooling and intensive music.
On most weekdays, usually at one o'clock, the choir sings the Salve and the Virolai, the hymn to the Virgin of Montserrat, in the basilica; it also sings at Sunday Mass and Vespers. The choir specialises in the composers of the Montserrat music school and has toured the world.
