About The Rack Railway and Cable Car

The two dramatic ways up the mountain: a rack railway that grinds up from the valley across a great viaduct, and a yellow cable car, opened in 1930, that swings up the cliffs.

Reaching the monastery is half the fun, by one of two dramatic mountain railways from the valley. The Cremallera, a rack railway, climbs about five kilometres and some 550 metres from Monistrol de Montserrat, using a toothed rail to grip the steep gradient and crossing a long viaduct, the Pont del Centenari. Its line first ran from 1892 to 1957 and was reopened in 2003.

The alternative is the Aeri de Montserrat, a cable car opened in 1930 and billed as the oldest in Spain, which swings up the cliff face in about five minutes. Both connect with the train from Barcelona, and both close in bad weather.
