The Museum of Montserrat, set beneath the squares in front of the basilica, holds the abbey's remarkable art and archaeology collections, more than a thousand works. It grew from a 'Biblical Museum' of 1911, built on antiquities a monk brought back from the Holy Land and Egypt, and was enriched by abbots and by private bequests.
Its treasures span the centuries: a Caravaggio Saint Jerome and old masters such as El Greco; an unusually rich group of French Impressionists for Spain, with Monet, Degas, Sisley and Pissarro; Catalan moderns including Picasso and Dalí; a hall of some 160 Orthodox icons; and ancient art from Egypt and Mesopotamia, including painted mummies.
