About Santa Cova (the Holy Grotto)

The cliff-hanging chapel on the cave where, by tradition, the Virgin's image was found. The path to it, the Monumental Rosary, is lined with early-20th-century sculptures, including a dramatic work by Antoni Gaudí.

The Santa Cova, the Holy Grotto, is, by tradition, the cave where the image of the Virgin of Montserrat was found; the legend, first written in 1239, tells of shepherd children who saw a light on the mountain in the year 880. A chapel, built into the cliff in 1696-1705 so that it seems to hang in the air, now holds a reproduction of the statue; the original is in the basilica.

The path down to it from the monastery is the Monumental Rosary, lined with fifteen sculptural groups built between 1896 and 1916 by leading Modernista architects and sculptors, among them a striking Resurrection scene by Antoni Gaudí. A funicular serves the route when running; the walk is steep.
