About The Basilica
The great single-nave church of the monastery, rebuilt after Napoleon's armies left it in ruins. Beneath a richly painted vault, hung with votive lamps, a decorated staircase leads up to the shrine of the Black Madonna.
The Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat is the heart of the monastery, a lofty single-nave church consecrated in 1592, standing between the Gothic and Renaissance styles, with chapels set between its buttresses and a great octagonal lantern. Napoleon's troops left it in ruins in 1811 and 1812, and it was rebuilt through the later 19th century. The ornate facade facing the atrium was inaugurated in 1901.
Inside, the richly painted and gilded vault rises over a nave hung with votive lamps donated by Catalan towns and communities. A decorated staircase and an alabaster portal lead up to the shrine of the Virgin, her silver throne a gift from the Catalan people in 1947. The young Antoni Gaudí helped on the lady chapel as an assistant.
