About The Serrated Mountain

The unmistakable mountain itself: a wall of pink conglomerate eroded into hundreds of rounded, finger-like pinnacles that give Montserrat its name, 'the sawn mountain', a world-famous climbing ground wrapped in legend.

Montserrat means 'the serrated mountain', and one look explains why: a long massif of pinkish conglomerate rock, eroded over ages into hundreds of rounded, finger-like pinnacles and domes that bristle against the sky. Its clasts of limestone, cemented together, were laid down as a delta some fifty million years ago and later thrust up and worn into these shapes.

The pinnacles have earned fond names, among them the needle-like Cavall Bernat, the Elephant and the Mummy. Montserrat is a world-famous rock-climbing ground and a protected natural park since 1987, and tradition has long linked the mountain to the legend of the Holy Grail that inspired Wagner's Parsifal.
