About Coves del Salnitre (Collbató Caves)

At the mountain's foot by Collbató, underground chambers hung with stalactites, worked for saltpetre and used since prehistoric times, visited by lantern-light since the days of Verdaguer and Gaudí.

At the south-west foot of Montserrat, by the village of Collbató, open the Coves del Salnitre, the Salnitre Caves: a karst cave system worn into the mountain's conglomerate, with a visitor route of roughly half a kilometre hung with stalactites, stalagmites and columns. The caves were once worked for saltpetre, and show signs of prehistoric use from Neolithic and Bronze Age times.

They have drawn visitors since about 1850, among them the poet Jacint Verdaguer, the painter Rusiñol and the architect Gaudí. Today they are seen on a guided visit of about an hour; a long climb of steps leads up to the cave mouth, and the air inside is cool and very humid.
