The Ljubljana route at a glance
Day 1
Day 1 covers 8 stops over about 2.1 km as the crow flies, from Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli) to Ljubljana Cathedral / St Nicholas's (Stolnica sv. Nikolaja). ≈ 2.1 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli): Ljubljana's rambling back garden, where a Plečnik promenade of pyramid lanterns doubles as an open-air photo gallery and two old mansions have quietly turned into museums. 1 km to the next stop
- National and University Library (NUK): Plečnik built a dark, heavy staircase that climbs into a hall of light, an allegory of ignorance rising toward knowledge, inside a library a wartime plane once set ablaze. 0.4 km to the next stop
- Cobblers' Bridge (Čevljarski most): A roofless bridge lined with stone columns that Plečnik built as a square on the river, on the very spot where Ljubljana's shoemakers once hammered their soles over the water. 0.2 km to the next stop
- Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad): Ride the funicular or climb the wooded ridge to a fortress that has been arsenal, garrison, hospital and prison, and still guards the dragon on the city's crest. 0.2 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Town Square (Mestni trg): Three marble river gods recline over a fountain everyone calls a Bernini and no one should: this cobbled square hides a case of mistaken identity and a secret swap. 0.1 km to the next stop
- Triple Bridge (Tromostovje): Most people never notice they have crossed three bridges at once, Plečnik's sleight of hand, fanning an old stone crossing open toward the city's central square. 0 km to the next stop
- Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg): At the city's heart the bronze poet Prešeren gazes forever across the square at Julija, the woman he loved and never won, her face carved on the wall opposite. 0.1 km to the next stop
- Ljubljana Cathedral / St Nicholas's (Stolnica sv. Nikolaja): For over a century the cathedral's grand dome was pure illusion, a flat painting that fooled the eye until a real stone cupola finally rose above it in 1841.
Day 2
Day 2 covers 7 stops over about 52 km as the crow flies, from Central Market (Plečnik's Covered Market) to Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar). ≈ 52 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Central Market (Plečnik's Covered Market): A working riverside market where you still buy your dinner, wrapped in a stone colonnade by the architect who redesigned all of Ljubljana and never finished this one dream. 0.2 km to the next stop
- Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most): Four copper dragons guard this Secession-era bridge, and someone will swear they wag their tails when a virgin crosses, a straight-faced local joke you should enjoy but not believe. 0.5 km to the next stop
- Metelkova (Metelkova mesto): A squatted former army barracks turned autonomous arts quarter, where murals, welded sculpture and late-night music cover every surface, and an old military prison now rents out artist-designed cells. 47 km to the next stop
- Bled Island (Blejski otok): Slovenia's only natural island, reached by hand-rowed boat, where ninety-nine Baroque steps climb to a pilgrimage church and a wishing bell that visitors ring to make a wish. 0.4 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero): An almost unreal emerald lake in the Julian Alps, warmed from below by thermal springs, ringed by a walking path, with a church-topped island and a clifftop castle at its heart. 0.9 km to the next stop
- Bled Castle (Blejski grad): Often called Slovenia's oldest castle, this clifftop stronghold first named in 1011 commands a staggering view over Lake Bled, and now holds a museum, a printing press and a wine cellar. 2.8 km to the next stop
- Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar): A kilometre and a half of wooden walkways pinned to sheer cliffs above the rushing Radovna river, threading past green pools and rapids to Slovenia's largest river waterfall.
Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
