About Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad)
Ride the funicular or climb the wooded ridge to a fortress that has been arsenal, garrison, hospital and prison, and still guards the dragon on the city's crest.
Ljubljana Castle crowns Castle Hill, a wooded ridge roughly 366 metres above the old town. A fortress here is first documented in 1144 as a seat of the Carinthian Spanheim margraves. The present complex is not a single-period building: heavily damaged by the 1511 earthquake, most of its walls, towers and courtyard date from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with further nineteenth- and twentieth-century alterations. The Gothic Chapel of St George, painted with heraldic coats of arms, dates from the late fifteenth century, while the Outlook Tower took its present form in 1848. Over the centuries the castle served as an arsenal, garrison, hospital and, in the nineteenth century, a prison, before its restoration in the later twentieth century. A funicular from Krek Square opened in December 2006. Owned by the City of Ljubljana, it is the city's most-visited attraction; the courtyard is free, other areas ticketed.
Did you know? For roughly nine hundred years, the only way up was on foot. The funicular from Krek Square finally opened in December 2006, the walking path still takes just ten to fifteen minutes.
