About Metelkova (Metelkova mesto)
A squatted former army barracks turned autonomous arts quarter, where murals, welded sculpture and late-night music cover every surface, and an old military prison now rents out artist-designed cells.
Metelkova mesto, formally the Metelkova City Autonomous Cultural Centre, is an autonomous social and cultural centre occupying former military barracks in central Ljubljana. The seven-building complex, covering roughly 12,500 square metres, was built for the Austro-Hungarian army and later served as the Ljubljana headquarters of the Yugoslav People's Army. After the army left following Slovenia's 1991 independence, a coalition of more than 200 groups known as the Network for Metelkova sought the site, and in September 1993, as the city moved to demolish part of it, activists squatted the barracks.
Today its buildings are covered in ever-changing murals, mosaics and welded sculpture, and host clubs, galleries, live-music rooms and prominent LGBTQ venues. Hostel Celica, a former military prison whose cells were redesigned by around twenty artists and architects, opened in 2003. The site takes its name from the adjacent Metelko Street, named for priest and linguist Fran Metelko; the neighbouring Museum of Contemporary Art is a separate institution.
Did you know? Hostel Celica occupies Metelkova's former military prison. Around twenty of its cells were each redesigned by a different artist or architect, and you can now book a night behind the original bars.
