About Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli)
Ljubljana's rambling back garden, where a Plečnik promenade of pyramid lanterns doubles as an open-air photo gallery and two old mansions have quietly turned into museums.
Park Tivoli is Ljubljana's largest and most popular city park, spreading north-west from the centre toward Rožnik hill. It was laid out in 1813 to a design by the French engineer Jean Blanchard, who merged the gardens around two country houses, the Podturn Mansion, today's Tivoli Castle, and the Cekin Mansion. In the 1920s and 1930s Jože Plečnik reshaped the park's entrance with the Jakopič Promenade, a monumental tree-lined walkway named after the painter Rihard Jakopič and lined with his pyramidal lanterns; it doubles as an open-air gallery for large-format photography exhibitions. Tivoli Castle houses the International Centre of Graphic Arts, while the Cekin Mansion holds the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia. The park has formal flower parterres, several ponds with fish and birds, statues, fountains, and wooded walking and cycling trails. Its often-quoted area of about five square kilometres generally counts the adjoining Tivoli-Rožnik-Šišenski hrib landscape park, not the ornamental park alone.
Did you know? The park's grand entrance avenue, the Jakopič Promenade, works as a free open-air gallery: its walls carry giant photography exhibitions, and Plečnik named the whole walkway after the Slovene painter Rihard Jakopič.
