About Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero)

An almost unreal emerald lake in the Julian Alps, warmed from below by thermal springs, ringed by a walking path, with a church-topped island and a clifftop castle at its heart.

Lake Bled is a lake of mixed glacial and tectonic origin in the Julian Alps, in the Upper Carniola region of northwest Slovenia, beside the resort town of Bled and about 55 kilometres from Ljubljana. It is roughly 2,120 metres long and 1,380 metres wide, reaching a maximum depth of about 29.5 metres. Thermal springs warm the water in summer, and its emerald-to-turquoise colour is the lake's signature.

Near its centre lies Bled Island, the only natural island in Slovenia, crowned by a pilgrimage church, while medieval Bled Castle stands on a cliff above the northern shore. A path of about six kilometres circles the lake. Visitors reach the island aboard traditional flat-bottomed pletna boats, rowed standing up. An important cult centre in the Bronze Age, the lake has also hosted the World Rowing Championships four times, in 1966, 1979, 1989 and 2011.

Did you know? The water is warm enough to swim in because thermal springs feed heat into the lake from below, lifting summer temperatures and helping give Bled its unusual emerald-to-turquoise colour.
