About Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar)
A kilometre and a half of wooden walkways pinned to sheer cliffs above the rushing Radovna river, threading past green pools and rapids to Slovenia's largest river waterfall.
Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6-kilometre gorge about 4 kilometres northwest of Bled, carved by the Radovna river on the edge of Triglav National Park. Its sheer walls rise roughly 50 to 100 metres, and the river drops about 250 metres over the gorge's length, forming a succession of pools and rapids. It ends at the Sum waterfall, about 13 metres high and the largest river waterfall in Slovenia.
The gorge is crossed by wooden walkways, galleries and bridges pinned to the rock, first built in 1893 and opened to the public on 26 August 1893. They were later named the Zumer Galleries after Jakob Zumer, mayor of Gorje, who explored the gorge with photographer Benedikt Lergetporer in 1891. A large stone-arch railway bridge of the Bohinj Railway, built in 1904-1905, spans the gorge below. The trail is one-way and open seasonally, from spring to autumn.
