About National and University Library (NUK)

Plečnik built a dark, heavy staircase that climbs into a hall of light, an allegory of ignorance rising toward knowledge, inside a library a wartime plane once set ablaze.

The National and University Library of Slovenia, or NUK, is widely regarded as Jože Plečnik's architectural masterpiece, built between 1936 and 1941 on the site of the former Auersperg (Turjak) Palace. Its outer walls combine red brick with irregular blocks of rough natural stone, some set to look as though it is still being quarried, evoking a monumental Renaissance palazzo. The main portal carries bronze door handles shaped as horse heads. Inside, the circulation is a deliberate journey from darkness to light: visitors climb a deep, dimly lit staircase framed by black stone columns and emerge into the large, top-lit Main Reading Room, read as a passage from ignorance to knowledge. On 14 February 1944 a military aircraft crashed into the building, and the resulting fire gutted the Main Reading Room, which was later restored. NUK holds Slovenia's national legal-deposit publications and serves as both the national library and the central library of the University of Ljubljana. It is part of the 2021 UNESCO listing of Plečnik's works.

Did you know? The whole entrance is an allegory you physically walk through: a deliberately gloomy black-columned staircase climbs into the brilliant, top-lit Main Reading Room, staging a journey from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge.
