About Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most)
Four copper dragons guard this Secession-era bridge, and someone will swear they wag their tails when a virgin crosses, a straight-faced local joke you should enjoy but not believe.
The Dragon Bridge crosses the Ljubljanica at the edge of Ljubljana's old town and is among the city's best-known landmarks. Built in 1900-1901 in the Vienna Secession style, it was designed by the Dalmatian-born architect Jurij Zaninović, a pupil of Otto Wagner, with a reinforced-concrete arch engineered on the Melan system. It replaced an older wooden crossing known as the Butchers' Bridge and originally bore the name Jubilee Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I, marking the fortieth anniversary of his reign. Four large dragon statues, made of sheet copper over a frame, stand on pedestals at the four corners, with sixteen smaller dragons ranged along the parapets. The dragon is the emblem of Ljubljana and crowns the castle tower on the city's coat of arms. Often called one of the first reinforced-concrete bridges in Europe, and the first in Ljubljana, it is a protected technical monument.
Did you know? Its official name was never 'Dragon Bridge.' It opened in 1901 as the Jubilee Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I, but the dragons proved so memorable that the emperor's title quietly fell away.
