About Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg)
At the city's heart the bronze poet Prešeren gazes forever across the square at Julija, the woman he loved and never won, her face carved on the wall opposite.
Prešeren Square is the central square of Ljubljana, a pedestrianised space at the northern foot of the Triple Bridge where the medieval old town meets the nineteenth-century new town. It is dominated by the pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, built in early-Baroque style between 1646 and 1660, whose main altar is the work of the sculptor Francesco Robba. At the square's centre stands the bronze Prešeren Monument, unveiled in 1905, showing the poet France Prešeren beneath a muse; it was made by the sculptor Ivan Zajec, with the setting designed by the architect Maks Fabiani. Prešeren (1800-1849), Slovenia's foremost Romantic poet, wrote 'Zdravljica', a stanza of which became the national anthem. Across the square, a relief of Julija Primic, the poet's unrequited love, is mounted on the house at Wolfova ulica 4. The square is ringed by notable Art Nouveau buildings.
Did you know? The poet's statue and his muse Julija are positioned to face each other across the square on purpose: his bronze gaze lands on her relief, carved onto the house at Wolfova ulica 4.
