About Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)
Most people never notice they have crossed three bridges at once, Plečnik's sleight of hand, fanning an old stone crossing open toward the city's central square.
The Triple Bridge crosses the Ljubljanica River, connecting Ljubljana's medieval old town with Prešeren Square and the nineteenth-century centre. Its wide central span is the older Hospital Bridge, a stone road bridge opened in 1842 to a design by Giovanni Picco. Between 1929 and 1932 the architect Jože Plečnik reframed this crossing, flanking the old bridge with two narrower pedestrian bridges set at slight outward angles, so that the three fan out toward the square; the side bridges were completed in 1931 and 1932. Plečnik added stone balustrades and lamps and cut staircases down to poplar-planted riverside terraces, integrating the bridge into his wider riverfront design. Now pedestrian-only, the fan layout was intended partly to separate walkers from the former road traffic. One of Ljubljana's signature landmarks, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as part of Plečnik's works in the city.
