About Central Market (Plečnik's Covered Market)

Ljubljana's Central Market runs along the right bank of the Ljubljanica between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, combining open-air stalls on Vodnik and Pogačar squares with Jože Plečnik's riverside covered market. Plečnik designed the colonnade between 1940 and 1944, with the city builder Matko Curk beginning work in 1940; construction was slow because of wartime shortages of building material. The building is a two-storey range following the curve of the river, with shops and a lower fish-market level at the water and an arcaded promenade above, its river wall pierced by rows of semicircular windows. A flower-market pavilion stands by the Triple Bridge, and two open loggias hold wells and river views. Plečnik intended a monumental roofed bridge to close the colonnade, but it was never built in his lifetime; the modern Butchers' Bridge, hung with love padlocks and Jakov Brdar's sculptures, opened on that spot in 2010. The market is part of the 2021 UNESCO listing of Plečnik's works.
