For over a century the cathedral's grand dome was pure illusion, a flat painting that fooled the eye until a real stone cupola finally rose above it in 1841.
Ljubljana Cathedral, dedicated to St Nicholas, is the Baroque seat of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana, standing beside the central market between Vodnik Square and Ciril-Metodov Square. The present church was built between 1701 and 1706 to a design by the Jesuit architect and painter Andrea Pozzo, replacing an earlier Gothic church; twin bell towers flank the west front. The interior is richly frescoed by the Italian painter Giulio Quaglio, who worked here in two campaigns, around 1703-1706 and 1721-1723. The central dome was originally only an illusionistic painting; the real masonry cupola was added in 1841. The church holds important Baroque furnishings, including work associated with the sculptor Francesco Robba. Two sets of bronze doors were added for Pope John Paul II's visit in 1996: the Slovenian Door by Tone Demšar and a side door showing the city's twentieth-century bishops by Mirsad Begić.
